A domain name is the web address of a specific, permanent Internet website. It is a part of the Uniform Resource Locater (uri) that allows all computers to identify a particular website on the Internet. Your domain nameserver is the location where your domain name points to on the Internet and it also acts as the DNS server. The DNS server is responsible for keeping track of all the websites that are pointing to your website. There are many different types of domain name servers and you need to choose one that is right for your purposes. There is a need for a domain nameserver that will be able to serve all the domains that your business and website may have. You want to ensure that you have the option of pointing all the sites that you need to the right place and at the correct time. Your domain name should be unique and not registered yet. That way when someone tries to register it with the domain name servers they cannot register the domain name that you have registered. It is often confusing and difficult for people to remember your domain name and the names of the sites that it points to. There are domain name checkers available and they work in a similar way to domain name registration sites that you would find online. You simply enter the name and hit the search key and a list of sites that point to the name will appear. Look through the list and see which ones you recognize. If you have a close connection to the internet you probably have this e-mail address or your website domain is the same. This is usually simple to do with a domain name checker. If you cannot remember your domain name you can use a domain name checker. Once you have found a domain nameserver that you recognize, hit the submit key. A list of domains that point to your domain name will appear. See if your domain name is already registered. If it is you will see an icon that you can click to submit your domain name for registration. If your domain name is not registered you will be required to register it. You will also have to set up the nameserver for the domain. On most hosting sites you will not need to enter any information about the nameserver itself. The system will ask you if you want to buy the nameserver and automatically configure it. If you are uncomfortable entering this information you can just click the "not" button on the browser and go back to the site. Some hosts provide a graphical user interface that will walk you through the process of configuring the nameserver for your domain. After you have entered in the details for the nameserver you will be given a control panel to enter any additional information. Make sure to save all changes and take a look back periodically to make sure the domain name is working correctly. Sometimes it is easier just to restart the server and make the necessary changes. If you are unsure, it might be a good idea to get some help from someone at the host site. Another option for domain name servers is to purchase a ready-made package. These packages can usually be found on the web for a reasonable price. If you have some programming experience you can build your own. The only problem with this option is that the support provided may be minimal. Support may not be available for the DNS entries for sub-domains. However, many hosting companies provide support for common scripts, like php, curl, and others. There are many different options for domain name servers, but your web host may provide the easiest and best solution. You should always consult your web host for the best advice. They can explain all of the options and explain the pros and cons of each. This will allow you to make an informed decision regarding which option is best for your business needs. |
